A simple template to print your own gray scale and value finder.

While working on the shading part of The Art & Science of Drawing I had to make a couple of value scales, but, as I am still not confident on determining the actual (real) value, I’ve decided to look for some objective way to determine these values.

The simplest method for this is using a gray scale and value finder.

If you’d like to make one of your own, here’s a simple template I’ve done myself. The main drawback with a custom made one is the reproduction accuracy of your printer - the one I’ve printed myself has a yellow/green tint to it, so buying a ready-made finder might not be a bad idea, though they are not cheap for being just a small sheet of paper.
